Really good introduction to runes and the mythology related to them
This book is a very accessible and complete introduction to the runes. This is in part because of the way in which this book has been structured. Zara first gives you some background information about Norse culture and then goes on to give a very comprehensive summary of the most important myths related to runes. For those unfamiliar with Norse mythology she has also included a short overview of the most important Gods and Goddesses. When I started on my own journey with the runes, I missed this type of structure in the books I turned to, so it was a refreshing surprise to encounter this in Zara’s book. What I like about Zara’s interpretation of the runes is that it is very apparent that she did her research, but also made an effort to incorporate the meaning that she attributes to them herself. So I believe that this book would make an interesting addition to the bookshelves of even those well versed in runes. What I would have liked to see Zara do more is to actually tie some of the myths into her interpretation of the runes. This would have tied the section on rune lore more neatly together with the section discussing their meanings, which now feels a bit like a standalone section. Having said that, this may have made the explanations less accessible to those new to runes. So this may have been a conscious choice by the author. What I love about Zara’s book is that it also comes with a lot of free extra’s to help you understand and memorize the runes, which will be really helpful to first timers.Having said that, I believe this book is well worth a read, no matter where you are on your rune journey.

    Informative
I dabbled with runes briefly, maybe 30 years ago, so I’m not that up on things anymore. I bought a set of runes for my granddaughter who likes tarot. I read the reviews and this seemed like the perfect book to provide meaningful and insightful knowledge about runes to get her started. I skimmed through it before I gave it to her and found it to be very informative and the last section of the book is a nice reference guide. I think this was the perfect choice.

A good basic guide to runes
Odin’s Runes is a good overview for someone who has an interest in the Elder Futhark runes. I’ve been studying runes for years , so I like to see different perspectives people have by working with them – even in beginning books.I like Greene’s breakdowns of topics to cover as background to connecting with runes (brief explanations of the gods, goddesses, and other areas). This is important information for those who are taking up the runes without a connection to the Norse or Germanic cultural spirituality the runes come from. It is also important to have this to help understand how the runes are influenced and share their messages with us.As well as the mythological connections, she also includes practical aspects such as how to get a rune set, how they are used in divination, ways to use the runes in divination, etc. she has good advice for rune sets. Her descriptions of the rune meanings do not go too far from other books already published. She provides a standard meaning in an upright and reversed (taking the reversal practice common in tarot). She finishes the book with standard spreads that can be used in a reading. It is disappointing that in a book about runes, she didn’t include the rune poems. I don’t expect an academic dive into the poems, but they should be included to accompany the rune descriptions. These poems are the basis for our modern divination interpretations and leaving them out is a disservice to the runes and the student from exploring the poems for insight. Even when focusing on only one of the rune systems, all three should be a part of any rune book. The poems don’t even have their own entry in the table of contents or a link to them in the bibliography.Overall, its a good beginner’s book and would companion to other study materials or in a study group. Also, for someone who doesn’t want to get in depth into Norse Paganism, but wants understand what the basics of the runes and background with them, this will be a good guide.

    Good read, easy follow.
I’ve read a handful of books, some that would indoctrinate you to thin or react to the runes in a specific way as if the energy was stagnant and unmoving. I’ve read some, such as this one that tells you about the overall Inter play between runes and their use, but also about its openness and flow of energy. ID recommend this book for beginners and everyone in general. If you’re like the all father and myself, ill read many texts on one subject because no on source has everything correct and complete.

Great – another female author on this topic! This book is a well written introduction and overview on the Vikings, their Gods and the runes. I recommend this book to beginners. The author writes concise, capturing from the start, inviting and encouraging to learn more about the Norse and build a relationship with the runes. It is much like a Runes and the Norse in a Nutshell. The runes open up themselves to each of us differently and so we have to read every book as the story of fellow travellers, that we may share in parts – like walking the path with a companion – for a while, a part of the long way. But there are so many books on the runes out there for those who want to dive deeper.

Best book of runes I have ever read, instructive and eloquently written, in more than simply rune lore but also history of many cultural religious material, has become my foremost book on the subject and holds pride of place in my library. I bought it to learn how to read runes but it is so full of interesting subjects, history and saga’s and nordic myths its a fascinating read . It’s hard to put down that I conpleted the whole book in one go within a night. The simple ideas of making your own runes and reading them is so helpful that I already started working with my creative brain to make my set of runes. One can never regret this purchase I bet. My compliments to the Author for contributing in the universe and making a special place in my heart. 💜
