About Turf Fires

Turf fires are the Irish way to keep warm! Much of Ireland is Bog Land, and contains compressed materials that form a soft, sinking ground. Traditionally, the family men would cut up their section of bog, pulling the material to the surface and cutting them into blocks. Turf then had to dry outside for at least a season until it became a hard rectangle. From there, the pieces of turf could be used to build a fire. In many parts of Ireland, there are few trees, and turf fires were the only way to heat the home!

Even today, many Irish folks still have turf fire places in their homes!

    Made a Fathers Christmas
This was great, my Dad had always told me a story of a great time he had in Ireland sitting in front of a fireplace and the beautiful aroma of the peat moss fire warming his feet. I wanted to recreate that for him. He was so pleased when he felt the peat moss in his own home. It is easy to use, looks exactly as advertised and I will be buying another one for myself.

This little Croft house is awesome! Works great, looks pretty and just the right size for its purpose! Now the Irish peat is actual peat and smells just like I remembered growing up in the Scottish Islands… dare say it made me homesick! The small square of peat burns for about 20-30 minutes.Yeah it’s the real deal!!

    Overpriced
I was expecting a nice quality ceramic but it is a cheap piece of ceramic with no dimension to it at all. Just painted on features. The peat aroma is wonderful though.
