MOISSANITE IS NOT DIAMOND
Things tend to come in waves on this platform, and apparently this week it’s folks calling moissanites diamonds. They are not. Period. I am a moissanite fan and have not a word to say against it, so long as it is presented for what it is and the word “diamond” is not tossed around like it doesn’t have a meaning. Moissanite is a hard, clear stone composed of silicon carbide that looks and behaves a lot like a diamond. Diamond is a hard, clear stone made of pure carbon (inclusions excepted), and lab diamond is exactly the same as diamond other than the place where it’s made – in dirt versus in a lab. There is also no such thing as a “moissanite diamond,” full stop, any more than there’s a such thing as a “ruby diamond” or a “sapphire diamond.” It’s one or the other and cannot, by definition and according to physical properties, be both. It is never okay to “help” consumers along in confusing the two stones – and there’s no reason to! Moissanite is an excellent stone in its own right and it’s actually quite popular as a more ethical alternative to mined diamonds with the added benefit of a much lower price point.So, that said, the center stone is indeed moissanite, and it passes a thermo pen with zero issues. That is, however, the only moissanite on the piece. Not only do we have misleading use of the words diamond and moissanite, but we have stones that the potential buyer is meant to assume to be moissanite (because NO materials are disclosed other than sterling and moissanite), but which are one hundred percent NOT moissanite. This is never okay, either. I can’t tell you what they are because again, zero materials are disclosed other than moissanite and metal, but I can tell you with near perfect confidence that they are neither moissanite nor diamond.So what’s a buyer to do? If it’s me, I personally would look for odd carat sizes. Here, if the center stone is 2 carats, the TOTAL carat weight of the moissanite should be an odd number because of the little stones. If you see two pendants that have the same general composition – one big stone and some small ones in more or less any configuration – and one lists an even number of carats, say 2.0, and the other says something like 2.84 (or literally anything other than 0 or sometimes .5 after the decimal), I would go with the one that DOES NOT have a nice round number. The listing can claim it never said the accent stones were moissanites if it just doesn’t mention them, but if the total carat weight includes the side stones, it is a CLEAR representation that all stones are moissanites. In my experience, the listings that are clear and unequivocal tend to deliver what they promise, and the ones missing information are not likely to turn out well for the buyer.It’s also not a bad idea to spend the $20 on a thermo pen if you intend to buy more than one moissanite piece. Physical properties do not lie, and when that pen reads positive, I am VERY confident that I’m holding either moissanite or diamond. If it fails to read positive, I’ll do a good bit of double checking before putting that into a review, just to be absolutely fair, but at the end of the day, I’m also very confident in those readings. Usually if I’m going to have a false negative it’s either a dying battery or the stone itself is too warm (though too cold will do it too if not properly calibrated), both of which work themselves out when tested again at indoor room temperature with a fresh battery. I’ve had maybe one stone out of literally hundreds ever come back truly inconclusive, and that’s exactly what I said in my review – inconclusive, not that it’s not moissanite.Anyway. This piece. It’s got one perfectly nice moissanite and a bunch of mystery meat stones. The tag on the chain is stamped 925, as it should be, and the chain does not react to a magnet other than the clasp, which is normal and expected because the inner spring should not be made of sterling. There is no stamp on the pendant that I can find, and I look very closely under magnification. There technically should be a stamp since the pendant and chain are separate pieces, as in not permanently attached to each other, but I have seen pendants missing stamps when sold as a set before and it’s not usually a cause for massive concern unless it sticks to my magnet, and this pendant does not, so it’s probably fine.There is, however, also no such thing as 18K platinum any more than there’s any such thing as 18K silver. It’s either 18K gold (white or yellow) OR platinum. Platinum metal just doesn’t use the 24 part scale like gold. Bad nomenclature is again not a good sign.There would be nothing wrong with this IF it’s accurately, completely, and honestly described – and I suspect but again cannot state with any degree of certainty that the complete and honest description would be moissanite with cz accent stones. I DO care about cz accent stones, though, and it’s relevant because those are much softer and will eventually show scratches and wear or even go cloudy. That’s less of an issue on a pendant than, say, ring or bracelet, but it’s not entirely irrelevant, either.
