Motherhood is an adventure filled with many ups and downs. The role of a mother is endless, and its importance can not be emphasized enough. Mother’s Day is just one of those days where we get to intentionally celebrate the blessings that mothers are in our lives, and to the world as a whole. 

One of the ways we can celebrate mothers is through prayer. Whether that is simply thanking God for the mothers in your life, praying for mothers at a Mother’s Day event, praying for those who have lost a child, writing a special card, and so many other circumstances, prayer remains a powerful tool.

1. A Short Mother’s Day Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I give You praise for the life of my mother today. It is not only on this special day that I get to call her mom, but each and every day. Thank You for the blessing that she is in my life, and for the wonderful memories that we have made throughout the years.

Thank You for the love, support, encouragement, and instruction that she has given me in my life. I am grateful that I get to call her mom, and to call on her in all the different phases of my life, knowing that she is always there for me. May she know and feel the love I have towards her today, and just how much of a blessing she is.

May she experience Your hand of protection, love, and peace not only today but all the days of her life. Please continue to bless her with Your presence, and fulfill the desires of her heart.

2. A Prayer Celebrating Motherhood

Dear Lord,

On this Mother’s Day, I want to lift up every mother in the world to You. When You created mothers, You not only created blessings on earth who are compassionate, but also hardworking, caring, loving, nurturing, and filled with generosity. There is so much of You that is seen in motherhood, and today I want to take a moment to celebrate that.

Motherhood is not an easy task. It is filled with ups and downs, great joy, and at times great sorrow. You know the hearts and needs of each and every mother. My prayer is that You fill their hearts with peace, contentment, and joy that can only be found in You. May that joy, and love flow into their roles as mothers.

I ask for Your blessing over mothers today, just as they are a blessing to us. May they know that they are truly loved, and celebrated, especially on those days when motherhood feels like a thankless job. May they find the strength and wisdom that they need to reflect You to their children, and be fully satisfied in You.

Father,

There are so many things that we can give You thanks for, but today we especially want to praise You for mothers. There is nothing as special as knowing and having a loving mother, and we give You thanks for the wonderful gift that they are to us all. 

As we gather today to enjoy this meal together on Mother’s Day, we ask that You bless the mothers who are here and all those around the world. We are grateful for the tireless sacrifices that they make each day to provide their families with care, guidance, nutrition, and support. 

We would not have enough time to list all the ways in which their role blesses the home and that of her children. So instead, we will ask that You bless her in the same way she blesses us. May she know the deep love and care of those around her, but more than that, may she be showered in Your love and care for her.

Lord,

I thank You for the blessing of a mother, not only any mother but especially my mother. When I reflect on all that she is to me, and all the sacrifices that she has made, I cannot help but feel immense gratitude for her life and love. Thank You for choosing her to be my mom, and blessing my life with hers.

Thank You for the strength that You have given her. Thank You for Your love that is so evidently flowing through her, whether that is in her words, actions, or the unspoken things. You have brought me guidance, and shown me a picture of love throughout her life.

Mom, may you know the richness of Christ’s blessings on this Mother’s Day. You are not only special on this day, but every day. Thank You for Your influence over my life, and for all that You have given me, showed me, and taught me. I thank God for You every time I think of You. Gracious God,

It is with great pleasure and gratitude that we bring every mother in this service to You today. We want to lift them up in prayer, thanking You for the life You have given through them. You have created mothers so uniquely, and without them, our society would be lost. The task of motherhood is not an easy one, yet, You have equipped them for it, and given them the grace to walk in it.

We want to pray for every mother who is present today, and those who could not make it. We ask that Your kindness would follow them all the days of their lives. May they bask in Your presence, and find the strength, joy, and hope that their hearts need in You. 

Please grant them wisdom in the areas where they need it, and grant them peace in times of chaos. We ask that You provide them with all they need, and refresh their souls. May they look to You in their roles as mothers, and find the grace, and love that they need from You, allowing it to overflow into their lives too.

Father,

We are grateful for life, and praise You as the author and creator of life. As we celebrate Mother’s Day today, we think of all the expectant mothers all across the world. We thank You for the incredible lives that You are forming inside of them, and that You know each of their unborn babies by name. 

We thank You that life does not begin during birth but at conception. So it is not only for the lives of their babies but for their own that we want to pray today. We ask that You protect expectant mothers during their pregnancy. May they find the strength and grace that they need for their changing and tired bodies, and find rest in You. 

We ask that You prepare them for the road of motherhood, and bless them in their journey. Please guard their babies, and help them to grow and develop healthily. May they experience the joy of motherhood to the fullest and find the grace and guidance that they need from You.

7. A Mother’s Day Prayer For Grandmothers

Dear Lord, 

We lift up a thankful prayer to You on this Mother’s Day for every grandmother. What a blessing it is to know motherhood, and to become a grandmother to your children’s children. We thank You for the lives of grandmothers today and the tender, loving, and nurturing care they bring into our lives. 

Thank You for the precious role that grandmothers play in the lives of more than one generation. We ask that they would know Your hand of blessing in their lives and that their lives would be founded upon Christ, the Rock. May He sustain them all the days of their lives, and fill their days with joy, peace, and love.

May grandmothers all around the world know that they are loved, and so appreciated. We ask that You protect them, not only physically but spiritually. May they be warriors for Your kingdom, and great soldiers of prayer. Please meet their needs today, and grant them Your richest blessings.

Heavenly Father,

Today our hearts are with all the mothers who have experienced the loss of a child. No mother expects to bury her child, and it is a gut-wrenching loss that no one can truly anticipate. Whether they have lost a child through tragedy, miscarriage, stillbirth, or illness, we know that the wound of loss runs deep.

May they know the love of Christ that runs deeper than even their greatest pain. We ask that You grant them grace, especially on this day. May they find comfort in Christ for their broken hearts. May Your peace that surpasses all understanding guard their hearts and minds. And may they look to You, and find Your compassion awaits them.

May they find Your comfort in times of grieving, and joy in the memories that they have of their children. May their hope be found in You, and their strength be a testament to Your grace in their lives.

9. A Prayer For Women Who Want To Be Mothers But Haven’t Been Able To Have A Child

Dear God, 

As we celebrate mothers today, and the gift of motherhood, we are mindful of all of those whose desires and dreams to become mothers have been shattered by loss, miscarriage, or infertility. Days like today can often be a painful reminder to them of those unfulfilled hopes, and it is our prayer that You bring them comfort today.

You know every woman who is waiting to become a mother. You are aware of the sleepless nights, anxious testing, and endless tears that they have experienced in their desire to become a mother. 

Some may feel as though they have reached the end, or have fallen into hopelessness. We lift them up in prayer today, asking for Your gracious hand to hold them. Remind them that nothing is impossible for You and that You are able to open and close the womb. Please bless them with the desires of their hearts, and may they rest in Your sovereignty.
