A complete in-depth guide to the ancient runic alphabet and its use in communicating with the gods, in divination, and in magical work.

American runologist Edred Thorsson provides a complete introduction to the world of runes for beginners and enthusiasts alike. Thorsson’s presentation of this powerful system provides a valuable tool for self-development and spiritual transformation.

This comprehensive guide is suitable to those new to the runes as well as for long-time practitioners. It includes:

An introduction to the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark along with an explanation of their definitions and mystical properties An exploration of the historical lore of runes, with reference to archaeological evidence to explain where the runes come from, what they mean, and how they evolved The hidden, esoteric dimension of runesThe cosmology of the Old Norse meanings of the runes to help explain the role they played and how they were used over time Specific explanation on rune magic, divination, rune poems, and runic numerology

This comprehensive guide also includes Instructions on how to make your own runes and imbue them with numinous power, arrange the optimum setting for a rune reading, and prepare yourself psychologically and spiritually for casting the runes.

This book includes material drawn from some of the author’s previous books—Futhark, Runelore, and Runecaster’s Handbook—as well as new additions and revisions by the author.

    Look up facts well!
This has a long explanation of runes, plus a totally handy look-up guide of different languages of runes. By far the best I’ve read yet for quick researching.

The product description on the first page states that the book consists of “portions of Edred Thorsson’s earlier works ‘Futhark,’ ‘At the Well of Wyrd’ and ‘The Rune-caster’s Handbook,’ but that description really doesn’t do the book justice. It is loaded with useful and well-organized tables, and the content shows a thoughtful and matured contemplation of the earlier works. Weiser got the right person to write ‘The Big Book of Runes and Rune Magic.’ It doesn’t have the early medieval runic letter tables, but those can be found in Appendix C of his book ‘Icelandic Magic,’ 2016. Together with the latter book and Thorsson’s ‘ALU An advanced guide to operative runology,’ the three books amount to an excellent collection for neo-pagans on runic knowledge and practices, far superior to anything else on the market that is directed to heathens rather than scholars.

Its the closest ive come to getting some real information it is a little cut short on some material and could go more in depth. It is hard to get good learning material on the subject without it being so basic at least this book isn’t that. right now I am in the midst of going through a class by jackson Crawford on norse mythology. hours and hours of lectures but once you get the behind information then some of the stuff in the book clicks too. There are a lot of ancient forgotten languages that use symbols and most think of it as magic and not a form of text and language that is the part that I am interested in. not so much the magic. There have been a lot of good books lost to the ages and pop culture being interested in the magic part. Still on the hunt for a book that leans more on the meaning of the symbols and different languages and uses

So I’m not trying to take anything away from Edred Thorsson in my opinion this book I just bought has a chunk of great information and knowledge that being said the many cons of this and other books of his is there is very few details on how exactly for example I’ll use his 3 fold matrix nornic expanded cast as pictures shows he doesn’t exactly explain properly how urdr, verdhandi and Skulds Knot of the slain are supposed to be used which for a pretty fast learning beginner I find that very unhelpful as it’s written by a crazy knowledgeable personHence 3 stars and I would not recommend this book to anyone just starting out aside from that, another con is in my opinion no open mind on how he describes casting using only either a basic 3 rune nornic cast then to more extreme casting for people who know more then a beginner. I would return this if it wasn’t full of immense knowledge so I’m happy ish about this book 50/50 but not for anyone just starting out
