OpenAI plans to eventually integrate its AI video generator Sora into ChatGPT and is interested in building a dedicated mobile app, TechCrunch reports.
At present, Sora is only available via a standalone web portal. It debuted in December 2024 after a limited beta (and some pushback from artists) and allows would-be filmmakers to generate videos of up to 20 seconds long based on text prompts for $20 per month. Earlier this week, it launched in the UK and the European Union.
In a Discord chat, Rohan Sahai, OpenAI’s product lead for Sora, said the ChatGPT integration may not provide the same level of functionality as the standalone version of Sora. In the full version, users can splice and edit the footage they generate with the tool.
Sahai said his team “would love” to build a standalone mobile app. OpenAI is hiring additional mobile engineers, but he didn’t reveal a timeline for a launch.
OpenAI is also planning several under-the-hood upgrades to Sora. Sahai said his team is at work on a new version of Sora Turbo, the underlying model that powers the Sora web app.

The news comes after OpenAI unveiled GPT-4.5 this week. A GPU shortage forced it to limit access to ChatGPT Pro users and developers, but it’s expected to roll out to Plus and Team users next week. OpenAI has promised a bevy of new functionality in the new model, including fewer AI hallucinations and “higher emotional intelligence and creativity” for tasks like writing.
