Emergency Signaling – Built into the handle of magnesium rod is a loud emergency whistle that can be used for signaling or calling for help if you should become lost or injured while in the outdoors. I bought a couple of these for me and the kids to play with. My son is enjoying all the survival shows and I thought heâd enjoy it. Weâve still not successfully started a fire with these. I think we finally figured out the concept, but it must take a lot of practice.

These really work!
I have several styles of ferro rods and strikers. These work just fine. I’m considering lengthening the cord to be able to put more power into the strike. But don’t be a sissy when you strike. Strike with a firm stroke. You will very likely want to first scrape down the side you will use the striker on to remove any coating, etc. For best results don’t strike by using the wrist action alone; rather, allow the whole forearm and hand to come down at the same time. I also recommend carrying tinder of some sort, such as cotton balls smeared on one side with vasoline. Aim your spark directly onto the treated cotton ball to extend the life of the spark. Practice in a safe place because once the flame ignites, it will be fast! You can do this. If you try forever and “it doesn’t work”, it’s user error. Keep trying until you figure out what works best and fastest for you.
