Clear, easy to read and understand
When I was in high school track, I wish I had had this information. As I read, I thought over my training or lack of training. This book would have been so useful. Sue Humphrey is truly a gifted teach/coach/author. Her explanation of each event was enlightening. Although I have participated in and watched track for years, I learned a lot about each event. I wish I had read this book before the Olympics this year. My grandkids had so many questions I could have answered better. The illustrations are very nicely done. My eight year old grandson is showing an interest in biking. I am sure I can use parts of this book to help him train.

    Perfect intro to track
As a middle school coach, I’m always looking for good resources for my athletes and families. For most this is their first experience with track and they have a hard time seeing the big picture or understand all that it entails. This book is the perfect resource for kids and parents to get them excited and serious about track. Most of what is out there is too advanced or too long, or geared more towards college/adults. I appreciated that she repeatedly states to try many events to see what you are good at, but most importantly to have fun. The book starts off with a history of the sport, which I think is important to know in any sport that you participate in. She does a good break down of all the different types of events without it being too overwhelming for the beginning trackster. Sue also gives some basics of types of workouts that kids should do, but not an actual workout plan. I will definitely be recommending this to my young athletes, parents, and volunteers so they can have a better understanding and appreciation of the sport. I would love to see a follow up book geared more towards coaches of young athletes. Sue Humphrey’s knowledge of the sport is invaluable.

Great information for the aspiring young athlete
What a wonderful book for those interested in any sport, but especially running. (which is important to every sport!) Coach Humphrey discusses the many aspects of being an athlete, how to get started, what to work on and ways to improve performance. She gives great information on every running event so the young athlete can better understand the training and commitment of each event. So easy to read and understand that I can’t wait to give it to my grandson , who is seven and exploring the many sports available to him. I’ll be looking forward to the next book detailing the field events!!!

Inspirational Guide to Inspiring Young Athletes
Coach Humphrey’s book is a fabulous tool to have on hand for any track coach or parent of a child who is already showing an interest in sprinting and running. I wish I would have had this book when my son was young to help teach him specifics about all the different ways to train for each running event. Beautifully illustrated and full of knowledge from an Olympic coach! Your athlete will be smarter about how to perform after this read because it teaches basic biomechanics related to approaches, fundamental agility and nutrition which will even help cross over into other sports.

Not the book it claims to be
Based upon the title and the qualifications of the author, I was expecting more than this book delivered. The subtitle includes the words “Olympic Developmental Training and Nutritional Guide”. Nothing in the book supports that, particularly after age 12. If this book were meant solely for a 9-12 year old, I would have a much different view of the book. Half the book is history of running (which is really interesting) but has nothing to do with Olympic-level training. There is a lot of describing but not much depth. For someone interested in running at a middle school level, he or she is probably already in track and getting coaching that surpasses anything in the book. There are no guides as to running plans or nutritional plans that I would expect from the title and the author. If you have a child who is really interested in track and wants a guide on training and nutrition, there are better sources out there.

Such a cohesive segue into the sport of running for youths
This book gives both beginning coaches and athletes the best overview of what is needed for a solid foundation in running. It is written in away to spark interest in the next up and coming generation of runners by helping them to see their potential and boosting their confidence. The section on “Don’t Forget These Areas” shows the author clearly cares about the athlete physical well-being as a whole. My niece will love this book and I can’t wait to share it with her!
