Living Runes provides a thorough examination of the Norse runes that will challenge the experienced rune worker to deepen his or her understanding of these mysteries.
The book begins with an explication of the story of Odin, the Norse god who won the runes by sacrificing himself on the World Tree. It continues by examining each of the individual runes in turn, both the Elder Futhark and the lesser-known Anglo-Saxon Futhorc. Each rune is studied not only from a historical viewpoint but also from the perspective of a modern practitioner. You will be introduced to the practice of galdr as well as the magical use of the runes and the proper way to sacrifice to them and read them for divination.
Most importantly, the book specifically addresses the runes as living spirits and provides guidance on developing a working relationship with these otherworldly allies.
Note:Living Runes was previously published as Runes: Theory and Practice (New Page, 2009) but for several years has only been available from Lightning Source via Ingram.

Do you know Odin?
It appears to me that Northern European shamanic/metaphysical traditions are poised to begin trending in a big way. I anticipate reviewing several books in the coming months that chronicle those traditions. When I decided to review âLiving Runesâ, it was because Runes are a practical divination tool that evolved from those Northern European traditions. The book turned out to be so much more than that and I canât thank Galina Krasskova enough for this unexpected treasure. She tells readers that the book is neither a beginnerâs course (although there is basic information) nor a detailed history of the Runes. Instead she provides pages of suggested reading on those topics and more. (I would suggest that novices acquire a set of Runes and turn to the chapter entitled The Elder Futhark. Pull one Rune a day, read the five to six pages on that Rune that Krasskova provides, and spend the rest of the day pondering on how that information is personally relevant.)What this book intends is to introduce readers to the organic nature of the Runes. There is a living spirit connected to each symbol and those spirits, if approached properly, will introduce readers to a world of spirits and a spiritual system that leads to effective metaphysical development. Itâs a path that requires sacrifice. One must shed the old skin in order to grow a new one. Itâs a tale told by Odin and these mysterious Norse carvings. Itâs a tale which Krasskova passes along powerfully and with great respect.(InannaWorks.com received a free review copy of this book.)

a book of lists, not a book of spirit allies
The author said the book was filling a gap in regards to treating the runes as spirit allies. That caught my interest, that’s why i bought it. But it shares nothing about her relationship with this spirits. It is a book of lists of associations with each rune, some intelectual, some shamanic, but in no case is there an exposition of the authors experience with the spirits. I also found the descriptions of the runes repetitive and mix matching many things over page and a half. Perhaps, personal experience and anecdotes would have empowered and ordered the variety of things listed for each rune.

E’ un testo non adatto ad un primo approccio con le rune, ma che regala degli spunti interessanti su come conoscerle e sul rapporto con esse. Contiene anche il futhork anglosassone spiegato.
