Mission to Mars!
Really cute and kitschy. Makes for a fun conversation piece as it defies expectations for your typical trendy desk zen garden. Totally fun!

Broken rake
I loved the idea of this Mars zen garden. Unfortunately, the quality isn’t great. The rake was missing one of the prongs and the tray itself looks pretty cheap. It’s a great idea, I’m just not impressed with the execution.

Unique Desktop Zen Garden
This little Zen garden is super cute. The Mars theme is really unique and a conversation starter. It comes with the base, sand, a tiny rake, a small plastic astronaut, a small plastic rover, and some lava rocks. The 9-inch size is ideal for a desktop.

Better in theory than in practice. No lid or alternate storage option
My daughter is currently obsessed with all things Mars, so we went ahead and got this for her. The idea on this is definitely a 10, but it loses something when you turn the images into reality. The main reason for her rating is that there’s no lid, or any other way to put it away/protect it when she’s not using it. For some reason I was thinking kinetic sand, but this is a fine particulate gravel that is currently so full of static that it’s jumping around like popcorn in its ziplock bag. She wanted to set it up and try it out, but without a lid, “how will I put it away again afterwards?” She doesn’t want to risk getting sand everywhere, nor does she want it getting full of dust and cat fur if it’s just left open, so until I find a container she can close, it’s going to be staying in the box.We did set up the rest of the set and examine it. The astronaut figurine is molded white with a gold painted face, and not much attention to detail on the paint job. The rover is also molded plastic, one piece, and the wheels don’t wheel. The description of “make grooves into the mars sand with the rake or rover” would lead one to believe that the rover could move. It’s not that hard, after all, to make a small vehicle that can move. But this is a molded chunk of plastic and you will never be making grooves with the wheels of this rover, as the wheels are flush with the plastic base. They’re also both very small – smaller than a Lego minifigure. She’d hoped to use this set to play with her Mars Base Lego set, but the scale probably won’t work out on anything but the rocks and sand.As for the sand, the color is perfect, and the texture is probably pretty accurate (this would definitely create a true Martian dust storm if you turned a fan on it!), but I’m not really sure there’s enough to fill this small container, and certainly none to spare. Including extra sand, or at least enough to have the depth of the rake tongs, would have been nice. Accidents happen, sand gets spilled, and this is not a sand I can pick up a bag of at Home Depot to replace what was lost. For the $20 price of this set, I would have expected better than a plastic bowl and rake, 2 extremely cheap molded plastic figures, 5 smallish volcanic rocks, and an insufficient quantity of sand. Now that it’s here, we’ll find a use for it, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Not at this price.
