The price is good. With some work it’s a good kit.
I was drawn to the kit because it seemed to be a complete kit at a price under $8. It had a ferro rod with a good handle, a tinder, a scraper, a length of cord and a bag to put it in. Add a bit of fat wood, a small knife or whatever, if anything, a person wanted to add.The FERRO ROD is of the hard type meaning the composite of metals it is made of doesn’t seem to have much magnesium in it. This affects the heat in the sparks and how long they last. The rod works but, it takes a good scraper to make sparks. They are short lived. As is normal, it is necessary to scrape off some of the protective paint before you can make sparks. Ferrocerium rods have a high percentage of iron in them which will rust and ultimately make it unserviceable. If used frequently the oil from the skin will help prevent this. The HANDLE is nice. It is stained with a logo burned into it. This is far nicer than the plain unstained white ones of the same style I have on others. The SCRAPER I received doesn’t have a good burr made when this type is stamped out in production. It’s not something you would think is intentionally done, while it might be, but it makes this type of scraper functional both in scraping the rod to make sparks as well as wood such as fat wood or a magnesium bar to make or improve the tinder. The scraper didn’t function well. I took it to a grinder and removed the paint on the edge as well as grinding it to make a sharp edge for scraping. It worked and I now have a functional scraper. This would not have been necessary if it had a good burr on the edge. This type of scraper is a multi tool of sorts. It has metric measurements on both sides which is helpful in navigation using a map. It has a combination bottle opener, which I don’t have much call for, and a quarter inch bit driver. I don’t have much use for the added functions. In the past, I’ve replaced this type of scraper with others such as Bayite because I’ve found them to be more functional. In this case, the scraper works and I can leave it attached to the cord. The CORD is the Chinese version which is far from military spec Paracord, It looks similar and is a length of cord if you need it. I opted for the orange version so it would be easier to see if dropped on the Forrest floor. It so happened that it is long enough for use in the configuration received with the rod and scraper. That’s good and not always the case. The TINDER is of the rope type infused with an accelerant and fire extender. It can be used as a tinder in it’s own right, or better used as a match to start natural tinder. To use I pulled one element of cord loose about an inch long and smashed and separated fibers. After some effort I was able to light with the ferro rod. The rope cord is made of several lengths smaller cord tightly bundled together with a wax . It is 4″ x 1/4″.The BAG is a good size for the kit. It will hold other items as well. It will fit in a pocket or pouch as desired. It’s a keeper and a good starter fire kit.I hope this helpful.

    Perfect for Scouts
I brought this and another flint and steel to my sons Cub Scout meetings the last month we have been practicing fire starting without matches or lighters and all of the third graders have really enjoyed learning how to use flint and steel

    GREAT PRODUCT
Well…I did order this…I remember it looked like it would do the trick…I just can’t remember what that trick was…(I know I must had a plan for this…just got nothing…) Still, gave it a few runs on some Tinderfire tabs and it works just great. If only I could remember why I felt like I needed it…NO REGRETS!! EVER!!!

    Works as advertized
If you have some fire starter material and 5 seconds, you have a fire. Probably one of the best “Prepper” items I have purchased. Not expensive and they just work!!

On a recent back country trip, the two lighters I had brought were lost on the second day, which would have been disastrous if I hadn’t brought this device with me.It took a bit of time the first night I used it to ignite the birch bark shavings I used to start my fire, but once the thin layer of black overcoat is worn away, that issue was gone.Very compact, the carrying case is valuable to help to locate the ferro rod in your pack when you need it.An essential piece of equipment to have with you in the back country, you may want to practice using the ferro rod before leaving.

Short version: you can hardly get a tiny spark if your striking with your left hand.Long version: We are “Alone” and “Survivor” fans. Bought these to go camping and have a family contest to see who could start a fire the quickest. We have 1 lefty among us. Everyone else got a fire going in a minute or 2. The lefty went last. Boy oh boy did we heckle him. Then he switched hands. No problem then.Turns out there is a difference. Who knew. Enjoy.
