Smaller deck but not mini, lovely colors, with a really detailed guidebook
I like this deck. It might not be a great deck for everyone, so I’ll give as much information about it as I can.It isn’t a full size deck but it isn’t mini size, it’s in between. The paper is rather light weight and the finish on the cards is slippery. So, there could be problems shuffling if cards pop out, but this would be an ideal deck for someone with smaller hands taking that into account. The images are easily read and decent size in spite of the smaller card size because this is a borderless deck, which I really like.The colors are very pleasing and the design on the back of the cards is quite attractive. I have a larger hot pink deck and sometimes the intense color is too much, the pink on this deck is neither intense or pastel. The image resolution is interesting. There is little pixelation as with some other reasonably priced decks because it looks like they somehow thickened detail lines in the images or filled some image areas with solid color…but attractive color. I don’t find the lack of detail a problem on some cards although it might not be acceptable to others. Look at the picture with arrows that shows how the detail is affected compared to other decks. Overall, this means some image areas are darker, but I’m fine with it.Surprisingly for a non-expensive deck, the guidebook is very detailed. For the major arcana, each card has keywords for the card meaning upright as well as for reversals. For the Court cards and minor Arcana, as well as key words there’s a detailed description for each card that could help someone new to Tarot understand the card. For example, for the Two of Cups, the description is: “A youth and maiden are pledging one another, and above their cups rises the caduceus of Hermes, between the great wings of which there appears a lion’s head. It is a variant of a sign which is found in some old examples of this card. Some curious meanings are attached to it, but they do not concern us in this place.”This doesn’t mean I agree with the descriptions or that they are accurate to Tarot tradition. Or, that the descriptions are non-discriminatory or inclusive because some of them are not! (The young man on the Page of Cups card is called “effeminate” which is offensive!) There is, however, a lot of information compared to most guidebooks. The book could be a starting point for some to learn more about the Tarot or interpret a card or layout (or not if the language isn’t tolerable).The box for the deck is thin cardboard. Strangely, the guidebook doesn’t fit in the box, so a pouch might be a good idea.I was looking for a mini deck to keep with me in my purse or backpack. I’ll use this one. All things considered, especially the lovely colors and size, it works for me. I don’t need a guidebook and can toss the one that came with the deck. This could be a nice deck for a beginner at a reasonable price depending on how you view the guidebook. A lot of decks in this price range don’t come with a book, and there’s lots of information online about Tarot if needed.
