Everything You Need to Know to Interpret, Read and Cast Rune Stones
Runes are enigmatic by nature. This is because the word rune itself originates from the Old Norse word runa, which means “secret” and comes likely from either the Proto-Germanic “runo”, which means “secret” or “whisper”. Since they are ancient symbols, the runes mean little to the untrained eye. But with practice and a little experience with them, you can activate their magical energies to create positive, impactful change in your life.
Even so, what are runes exactly?
Nordic Runes were considered magical symbols used by spirits to communicate with humanity. Not only are runes considered a writing system, but they are engraved stones used to perform magical spells, cast divination, and even add power to conventional writing. The runic alphabet is referred to as the Futhark and consists of 24 symbols. Runic inscriptions are found all over the world, but especially in Northern Europe. The runic alphabet is broken down into three groups: The Younger Futhark (16 symbols), the Elder Futhark (24 symbols) and the Anglo-Saxon Futhark (between 26 and 33 symbols). The knowledge of runes has been passed down through the centuries, and it is an important form of divination for modern pagans.
In Runes for Beginners, best-selling author and practitioner Melissa Gomes explores the history and mythology of icelandic runes, as well as their day-to-day uses in divination, magic, and witchcraft. Runes for Beginners is completely accessible to those with no experience in Norse mythology or pagan mythology, heathenry or paganism. It is written with an eye toward those starting on their journey into the Viking spirit. Melissa provides a basic introduction to magic runes and their lore, and she explains how to get in touch with them through the senses. You will emerge from this guide with a solid understanding of the Nordic runes’ role in heathenry and with a firm foundation of knowledge to build your own runic practice, regardless of your religious or spiritual pagan path.
The rune symbols are central to Nordic pagans’ magical systems and can be used in various ways depending upon the tradition and your intent. Each runic symbol represents a specific type of energy, and these energies can be used to achieve a multitude of goals, spanning from protection to fertility, wisdom, or love. Runes can be used as divination tools in the ordinary sense that we use tarot cards today, or in a magical sense to interpret fate.
In Runes for Beginners, you’ll learn how to use runes for divination, magic, and witchcraft, including:
History of runes and their role in Norse magic (magick)The origins of rune wisdom in Norse MythologyAn overview of the Elder Futhark runes, including their names and magical usesElder Futhark rune meaning for both divination and spellworkTips for successful divinationRituals for casting runesTraditional and contemporary norse rune spreads

You will also have a working knowledge of how to use them in magic for various purposes such as divination, healing, and more. Mastering runes can be a lifelong journey, but this book will get you started on the right path.

Beginner here! Everything we need to know & then some.
I’ve been so curious about runes for years but have never known enough about them to feel confident in using them. Melissa Gomes has written a thorough and thoughtful book for the beginner. I liked the format a lot as the first few chapters gives detail on the history of runes. Then the magic use, divination, sacred singing. Rune scripts, talisman, binding so much information is covered.Moving along to chapters 7, 8 & 9, my favorites and ones I know I’ll revisit time and again. These chapters are the breakdowns of the aetts. Three aetts divisions of the runic alphabet containing eight runes each. Chapter 7 Freya’s Aett; Chapter 8 Heimdall’s Aett; Chapter 9 Tyr’s Aett. The format is great, each letter has a “cheat sheet” if you will, a great reference point while learning. In each description is found: Also known as, Pronunciation, Letter sound, Translation, Keywords and then an “all about”.Later chapters are about rune reading, choosing our questions, preparing the reading, interpretation and so on, pretty much all the basics and how to do it. My biggest take away thus far is getting to know my runes, I really am that green at this. I want to use them with respect, and this book is teaching me all of it.I’m not quite ready yet to do my own readings. For me I will take the advice of knowing my runes, I want to be able to know what each rune actually means & how to pronounce it etc. before I delve. This book is a great self-starter, it’s answering questions I didn’t even know I had. I feel it’s definitely thorough starting point for the beginner, something I will use again and again until I feel ready to cast my first runes.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Kindle version needs editing
I was so excited to read a book about runes (Iâve been fascinated by them for at least 25 years) but the many editing mistakes and formatting problems severely lessened my enjoyment. In the middle of a sentence you will see a random number, as if the kindle book was just scanned from a printed book by machine and not edited. There are many spaces in awkward places with no rhyme or reason. In the free workbook, not only do you have to sign up to a newsletter to get, the workbook is even worse (missing letters in words, obv no proofreading was done!)It makes it very hard to enjoy the book despite the information presented. Also the free ebook link does not work. There were some confusing and conflicting parts to the information in my opinion. In one part it said runes were always written vertically and then immediately on the next page (and next chapter) it said they were written left to right. It also said Wiccan practitioners use them for magical purposes and divination, which is far from what they used to be used for. What?! Am I missing something??Another annoyance was the runes themselves arenât pictured on each page with the meaning so if you want to look them up youâd better know what they look like. They are in a chart at the beginning of the chapter but it would be SO MUCH BETTER to have them on each page.Despite reading some really interesting history and the rune meanings seem to be spot-on, I would not recommend this book to a beginner. And until someone edits it, anyone really.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Seems to have a good amount of information however there are no illustrations or images of the actual runes. What does Fehu or Tiwaz or Ingwaz look like? The book doesn’t tell you.Not exactly useful unless you’re already familiar with the runes and their names. Wouldn’t say its for beginners. If you’re looking for a decent rune for beginners I found Lisa Chamberlain’s book far better as it has visual runes, meanings as well as a visual representation of the Runes converted.Decent information but if you dont already know the Runes by image and name you’re not going to learn it from this book.(Just noticed this book is basically a copy and paste from Lisa Chamberlain’s book published in 2018 so updating my review to 1 star, wasted my money.)1/5â
