Tahini, from the Arabic word, tahana, meaning to grind is a creamy sesame butter made of roasted sesame seeds, and that’s it!
Our seeds are sourced from Humera in Ethiopia and roasted at precise temperatures to lock in their natural flavor and exceptional nutritional benefits.
Tahini is a versatile, nutritious ingredient for cooking and baking, spreading and drizzling, or eating by the spoonful.
Our Beginnings
Our three founders, Lisa, Rachel, and Monica, grew up in three different countries: Lisa in Israel, Rachel in Australia, and Monica in the USA. Their paths crossed in New York City in 2015, where they discovered a shared passion for food, cooking, and nourishing their families with healthy, quality food.
Brick by Brick
Determined to show Americans how versatile and delicious tahini and halva could be, we opened a small kiosk in New York’s bustling Chelsea Market in 2016, and became the first store in the US dedicated to sesame products. We welcomed locals and tourists from all over the world, connecting over nostalgic tastes and introduced new audiences to traditional foods, rooted in centuries of culture and history.
We worked the counter seven days a week, sampling halva, grinding tahini to order, and serving up other treats like halva paninis and our iconic tahini soft serve. Within a few months, we were blown away by the enthusiasm for our products.
From Our House to Yours
Soon after opening the kiosk, we built a website and then Whole Foods Market came knocking, looking for a halva brand with clean, natural ingredients. And, with that, our retail and e-commerce businesses were born. Today, we are proud to say that our products are beloved by chefs and home cooks alike!
Meet Rachel, Our Co-Founder & CEO
Rachel moved to New York from Sydney with her family in 2014. “I was a food entrepreneur trapped in the body of a media lawyer,” she says, and after 15 years of practicing law, Rachel found an opportunity to combine her lifelong passion for food with business, co-founding Seed + Mill with Lisa and Monica in 2016.
Rachel is the daughter of an immigrant, who was the daughter of an immigrant. “The history of food, its culture and migration, as well as its ability to bring people together over a diverse and lively table is why I love what I do!” A global citizen, Rachel has traveled the world, and lived and worked in 5 different countries. Rachel currently lives in New York with her husband and two children, Annika and Oliver, and her beloved dachshund, Buddy.

I use tahini as salad dressing but was getting bored with the flavor. I had been adding hot sauce to make it more interesting, but that would change the texture too much. I discovered this and did the happy dance around my kitchen! Seriously, itâs that good!!!

This tahini was recommended by a vegan YouTuber I follow. instead of just buying some at the grocery store like I usually do, I clicked the link to help her out. Even though it’s quite expensive, it’s worth it for the quality.Most tahini I have tried has tasted bitter, and it tends to separate and be hard to stir. I’m not sure what magic they performed on the sesame seeds here, but this brand has a nice flavor and consistency. It tastes good straight out of the jar. When I used it to make hummus, it turned out much better than usual.The consistency is much runnier than other nut butters and other tahini brands I have tried, even after refrigeration. This might be a problem for some, but for me it made it a lot easier to scoop and measure. And the extra moisture made it easier to blend the hummus.I’m always excited to learn a new cooking hack, so the benefits of using a high quality tahini is a welcome discovery.
