Excellent unique flavor profiles
Unique international food profiles made accessible for most well stocked US based grocery stores. Love the Hawaiian cabbage salad and Thai noodle and dried pineapple salad. Most of the recipes take less than 30 minutes of effort and are reliably tasty. If you are beyond a very beginner chef, most of these recipes should be very easy to accomplish and pictures are unnecessary.

Fantastic Recipes!
This is such a wonderful cookbook, whether you’re vegan or not. I’m vegetarian and my boyfriend is a devoted carnivore, but we’ve both loved every recipe we’ve tried so far – about a half-dozen or so. This is a far better success rate than we’ve had with any other cookbook, let alone a veg cookbook.I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially someone trying to eat healthier or go veg. I was skeptical about the Sweet Potato and Black Bean Quesadillas, but they’re so delicious – and I don’t even like sweet potatoes. And I didn’t even miss the cheese. Other yummy recipes are the Plantain Soup, Costa Rican Beans and Rice, Vietnamese-Style Cellophane Noodles with Mixed Vegetables, and Thai Pineapple Fried Rice. For the most part, the ingredients are pretty easy to find. Some of the seasonings can be more challenging, though. For example, I have yet to locate any “Chinese chili paste,” but it’s pretty easy to figure out appropriate substitutions (chili sauce, red pepper flakes, etc). And for those who don’t keep peanut oil on hand, vegetable oil with a bit of peanut butter works just fine.

Tasty and simple
I am not a vegan but I simply love this book! I do, actually, live in the tropics so the ingredients are fresh and readily available. Either way, however, I feel that she does not use extravagant ingredients as I have found in other vegetarian/vegan cookbooks. Even if you do not live in this climate, you can find all of these ingredients in most grocery stores. The recipes are simple and tasty. I sometimes do change a few of the recipes or add a bit more to them but this is more personal preference than a necessity.I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to add a bit more spunk to their daily diet. If you like tropical fruit, trying new things and a variety of cuisines..then you will enjoy this book.

Fantastic! So exotic!
This book is awesome. Exactly what I was looking for as I’m not much of a cook or imaginative with food. But this book got me so excited I tried some of the recipes and they are wonderful! Checked it out from the library but now am buying it. I love exotic vegan food. Just make sure you get the ingredients first before trying recipes. Some ingredients are more exotic and you might have to go to an Asian market, Indian spice market, or natural foods store. I would recommend this book for everyday, but also if you want to impress your non-vegan friends with delicious and interesting food.

yummy, unusual recipes –not just for vegans
I really liked how unusual and different the recipes in this cookbook were. I like to cook vegetarian meals occasionally and I get bored with the same Asian and Mexican flavors that seem to be featured in most other vegetarian cookbooks. Some of the recipes in this cookbook call for offbeat ingredients (lime kaffir leaves?) but what’s great is that the author suggests a readily available substitute (such as the rind from an ordinary lime). I think you can find the vast majority of ingredients in any well-stocked supermarket. I found a slightly used copy on Amazon for $7.50– a great deal.

Buy This–Even If You’re Not Vegan
This is an absolutely fantastic cookbook. You don’t even have to be vegan to enjoy the recipes. I bought it because we were vacationing with a couple in Jamaica, and one of them is a very strict vegan. We were incredibly impressed with the variety of recipes–and how easy it was to obtain the ingredients. A chef friend saw it, and he’s ordered it for himself.

Disappointed
Supermarket Vegan: 225 Meat-Free, Egg-Free, Dairy-Free Recipes for Real People in the Real World by Donna Klein is one of my favorite cookbooks, so I had high expectations for this one. I’m giving it three stars because I’ve found a few good recipes in it, but overall it’s been a disappointment. Many of the recipes are excessively high in fat and refined carbs, calling for ingredients such as vegetable shortening and sugar. To its credit, it does provide a nutritional analysis for each recipe, so if this is important to you, you can eliminate the less healthy offerings. Another issue I have with this cookbook is that many of the recipes call for exotic ingredients that are not readily available, even here in Hawaii where ethnic cuisines are the norm. I highly recommend Supermarket Vegan. It has a wide variety of quick and easy recipes that are both healthy and made from ingredients available at your local supermarket.

Donna Klein’s recipe books
This cookbook, as well as Ms. Klein’s other books, ought to be required reading for vegetarians. The recipes are simple, quick, and use ingredients that are readily available. Best of all, everything we’ve tried actually tastes good! Even my non veggie kids like the dishes I’ve served them.

I had another Donna Klein book that I loved so I ordered this one. The recipes are easy and SOOOOO flavourful! She uses lots of chiles, herbs, tropical fruits and nuts, coconut milk, etc… With recipes from the tropical regions of each continents (ex: the caraibes, africa, australia, south-East asia, etc) No animal products but all the bang of tastiness!

Wow,I loved this book. Not many pictures, but loads of recipes. Some can be a bit similar, but there is also so much variety, using easily findable ingredients. I love tropical and ethnic food, and this has lots of stuff that non-vegans would like as well, i.e not ‘obviously vegan’ stuff.
